Tips for Moving on a Budget

So you just found your perfect home using Homes.com and now you’re preparing for your move. Regardless of whether you are using moving professionals or friends, moving on a budget is possible – here are some tips that will make your moving experience a financial economical one:

Moving Your Services:

Make sure to contact your utility providers, cable and other services to let them know you’re moving. You do not want to pay for bills at two places, plus this will minimize the interruptions in service.

Research moving professionals and/or truck rentals:

If you are looking to use moving professionals, then shop around for the best deal you can get. If you’re looking to move in the “off-season” (typically winter months) or during the week then don’t be afraid to ask for a reduced rate. Also check if they have a military discount policy-every little bit helps! If you’re not using professional movers, then any strappy friends will do! Shop around for various truck rental companies to find out the best deal you can get for your size move. Again, don’t forget to ask about any discount policies!

Get Moving Materials for Cheap:

Have friends that just recently moved? Ask them for their boxes! Or go to your local grocery store and ask if they have any extra boxes you can have. Also ask the office admin or whoever handles your deliveries to save a few boxes for you. Packing tape can be purchased at the dollar store, you’ll need a pen or permanent marker to label where the boxes go (bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.) and bubble wrap (or newspaper is a cheaper alternative).

Be Organized:

Remember that every hour you waste is costing you time and money. You will be using either professional movers or friend’s time and/or paying for a rental truck longer than necessary. Have a game plan and make sure you do as much prep work as possible. This will make moving day so much easier for you and your helpers!

Think about food:

After moving you’ll likely be too tired to cook every night during the busy weeks ahead. So dine out at half-price with an Entertainment book full of coupons for meals. The books cost between $25 and $45, depending on locale, but that money can be recouped after just a few meals. Or if you have family nearby, maybe mom or grandma can invite you over or bring pre-made meals for you to eat during your transition.
