Wide Open Spaces (Or Not)

Two years ago I entered into a marriage with an amazing man and found out quite quick that our modest incomes, even when combined, would only allow for us to live in a very small house. However, we weren’t alone. With the economy being so unstable these days, more and more people are choosing to pay less in rent/mortgage payments, even if it means they have to live in smaller spaces than they’d like. Even though this situation isn’t ideal, it’s easy to make the most of it and make your space look bigger. By using the following five techniques, we were able to make our tiny house look much more spacious. Maybe they will work for you, too!

  • Lighten Up.

When you begin choosing paint colors, make sure to select light hues. Stick to whites, beiges, yellows, light greens, and so on. Lighter colors will make a room seem bigger and roomier than it actually is.

  • Open Up.

To go along with your lightly painted walls, make sure to keep your windows open and not obscured. When your windows are uncovered, it provides the illusion that there is more space in your room. And, of course, it offers up the natural beauty of the world outside as an added bonus.

  • Straighten Up.

Nothing shrinks a space like clutter. If you can, try to completely eliminate clutter. If you can’t get rid of it, you can make it less invasive by organizing your things by color. Even if a shelf is full of various odds and ends, you can calm down the clutter by putting things together that are the same color.

  • Glass Up.

Hanging big mirrors on the wall is not only an easy way to decorate, but it also can create an optical illusion that a room is bigger.

  • Smarten Up.

Utilize furniture pieces that can double as storage, for example an ottoman or a coffee table with drawers. This will help with clutter and keep your furniture to a minimum, which will open up the space in your rooms.

Small spaces do not necessarily mean bad spaces! It is quite possible to make your tiny home feel spacious by using the above tips. It’s amazing what a little paint, creativity, and imagination can do for your home.
