Outdoor Living Spaces – How they can Add Value to your Home

April 18, 2012
by Shelley Smith

I’ve always been envious of those homes that have screened in porches, large beautiful decks and amazing outdoor living spaces. What I love most about them, is the idea of bringing the comforts of the indoors, outside.

I used to think that having a deck on a home was just something that looked nice, but really, building a deck or outdoor living space is a great way to maintain or improve your homes value. In 2007 Remodeling Magazine claimed that a beautiful, well designed outdoor living space can almost match your investment dollar-for-dollar, when selling your home.

Outdoor living spaces can be really beneficial to homeowners who love spending time outside, entertain often, or just want to clear up some of the congestion inside. Decks and other designated lounge areas just outside of your home create an additional place for your guests and family to dwell comfortably. Wood decks have been proven to be the most popular type of material for outdoor living, because of it’s low cost.

US News states that “Building an outdoor living space is one of the most affordable ways to expand your home. Adding outdoor living, verses building an entire additional room onto your home, can cost you less then half the price and save you tons of money.”

During the Spring months is also when home buying is in it’s prime. Outdoor living areas that have personality and go above and beyond, with special features such as paved walkways, built-in sinks and BBQ’s or custom storage for outdoor equipment and toys, are what will really bring those buyers knocking on your door.

A beautifully designed outdoor living space can set your house apart from the rest and is also incredibly appealing for home buyers who are in the market for a new home. So when thinking about ways to improve the value of your home this year, see if a new deck, screened-in porch or outdoor living area fits into your plans!

So many fabulous inspirational ideas that I can save and incorporate into my very own screen porch. It’s in need of a refresh!
