Love Thy Neighbor – Apartment Living

For those that have lived in an apartment, it’s safe to say that it has both advantages and disadvantages. Although everyone’s experience may vary, neighbors are what can make or break the way you perceive living in an apartment. Bad neighbors can be a major nuisance, which will undoubtedly put living in an apartment at the very bottom of your to-do-list. On the other hand if you are lucky, you will get the neighbor that makes your living experience that much more enjoyable. So before you move into your new apartment, Homes.com has a few tips that everyone should know to keep you from being “that neighbor”.

Get the Timing Right:

Always coordinate your activities with the appropriate time to do them. If vacuuming at 2 a.m. helps you fall asleep, try reading a book or doing homework – either way you desperately need to find new means of falling asleep. Continually creating unnecessary noises will eventually lead to conflict. The rule of thumb is if you can hear them, they can hear you just as well.

Your Guests, Your Responsibility:

Neighbors don’t know your guests, but they know you. Even if you are absent while your guests are on the property, you will be held liable for their actions. If you are hesitant of your guests behavior, there is a pretty good chance that your neighbors won’t approve of it either. When choosing who you have at your home, just remember their actions will have a direct effect on your relationship with the people that live around you.

Common Areas:

While living in an apartment, there will usually be a common area that the residents of your building share. Imagine planning a cookout with your friends or family and finding the grill area covered in trash, this would obviously change your opinion of the party responsible. To avoid any conflict, be sure to pick up after yourself and leave it the way that you would like to find it.

Parking:

Parking in apartment complexes can be very hectic, there is only a limited amount of spots available around your building. You will be assigned a specific spot, make sure that you park in that spot and that spot only. Coming home and having to park down the street because someone is in your spot gets very obnoxious. Regarding guest parking, be sure that they only park in the spots designated for visitors, even if parking in front of the building is more convenient. It may not seem like a big deal now, but when you are carrying groceries from across the street you will soon realize how much of a hassle it can be.

So next time you find yourself moving into a new apartment, keep these helpful hints in mind. Living in an apartment can be fun as long as you “love thy neighbor”!
