Jessi’s Home is a Place to Create

In support of the Inspiring Home Moments campaign Homes.com reached out to bloggers and asked them to share their home moments. These are Jessi’s home moments.

Hi, let me introduce myself! I’m Jessi, and I blog at Practically Functional, a blog about simple, practical projects and ideas to help you love your home, no matter where you live. I think it’s incredibly important that your home is a place where you can do the things you love, because your home is so much more than just a house; it’s where your life happens!

My home is a small apartment just a few miles north of downtown Chicago where I live with my husband and our two cats. We only have 650 square feet to call our own, but that doesn’t stop me. I decorate, I craft, I DIY, I build, I organize, I cook… I even garden! Since the day we first moved into this apartment I’ve been turning it into a home I love to live in, one step at a time.

I have always loved working with my hands and I love the feeling of accomplishment you get when you’ve created something new. There is nothing better than sitting down after a long day and letting my creative side take over, so it’s important to me that my home is a place where I can create!

I had been using the table in the dine-in area of our kitchen for crafting, but it really wasn’t enough space for me. My craft projects felt cramped and I didn’t have enough storage to keep my supplies handy. So we got rid of the table and built a giant craft desk into the space instead! (Don’t worry, my home is still a place for eating, we just don’t eat in the kitchen anymore!) Now I have a ton of space for crafting, painting, sewing, or whatever my current project is!

Build in a craft desk to give yourself room to create!

My home is also a place to play! My husband and I LOVE board games and we can spend an entire night playing one game over and over and over. We have to reorganize our closet every few months or so to make room for all the new games!

This card table is our “game table” and we pull it out whenever we want to play something. It’s perfect because it gives us room to spread out a game and play whenever we want, but it folds up nice and small so it doesn’t take up too much of our limited storage space when we’re not using it.

Use a folding table as a place to play if your space is limited because it can be folded up and put away later!

The apartment we live in is just a collection of rooms. It’s living here and making it our own that turns this collection of rooms into a home. And it’s using this space to play games, drink tea, read books, and express my creativity that makes this home a place where I love to live! How do you turn your collection of rooms into a home? What is your home a place for?
