Repurpose a Dresser into a TV Stand

It’s fun to keep up with the trends when it comes to your home décor. Staying practical yet trendy can sometimes get tricky, though, so this is why I love to re-purpose furniture. Turning a standard bedroom dresser into a TV cabinet is one of the most popular trends in furniture re-purposing. Whether you are looking for a new piece, already have a dresser or you find one at a thrift store or garage sale, it’s very easy to convert.

Decorating Tip: Make sure the cabinet is about 1/3 bigger in size than your TV, otherwise the TV will make the cabinet look top heavy and won’t provide enough support for the TV. The black screen is dominant so you need the base to be larger for balance.

If you plan to re-purpose furniture, keep in mind that it can be tailored to you! As you can see in the before picture, the wooden dresser I found had lots of drawers that I wouldn’t need. I removed the top three drawers in order for my electronic boxes to fit. Once I removed the drawer boxes, the surface underneath wasn’t flat. I purchased plywood, cut three sections to size and then painted. All that was left to do was lay the plywood inside of each section; no nailing required. You will also need to cut a hole out in the back of the cabinet in order to pull your cords through so you can plug them into the wall.

Storage is always important in any home. This is why a dresser is great for re-purposing as a TV cabinet – it gives you room to store all of your extra manuals, cameras, cords, movies and games. You can never have too much storage. If you are interested in more tips regarding how to re-purpose furniture and other DIY projects, visit the Homes.com Idea Gallery.
