Bringing the Outside in: Decorating with Rustic Flair

Christmas-decor

Today is the first snowfall of the season. You know… the one where you’re still excited and you run to the window just to watch the flakes fall. The one where your mittens still match and the sled isn’t broken and a cup of hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows is a treat you haven’t had in a while. And everywhere you look is a winter wonderland.

This year why not celebrate the holidays by bringing all that wonderland inside? Here’s a few ideas on bringing the outside in and adding a little rustic flair to your holiday decor.

Greenery

1. Start with fresh greenery

Nothing says Merry Christmas, happy holidays and welcome-to-the-season all rolled into one …like fresh greenery.

Decorating-with-Free-Greens

Layer in a variety of evergreens like cedar, pine, and magnolia. You can string them as garlands over a doorway to greet your guests or create a simple table runner with fresh greens tied with bright red bows and scattered with pinecones.

2. Mix in greenery with your artificial trees

Never underestimate the importance of a little fresh greenery tucked into your Christmas trees. Even Charlie Brown’s tree can look like it belongs in Rockefeller Center with the addition of a little fresh magnolia. Here, cut magnolia is tucked into the base of the tree as well as wound through the branches, giving this simple big box tree a custom flair.

Twig-Wreath

3. Add twigs and branches to your holiday display

I love twigs. Seriously. 1. They are free 2. You can pick up the yard and decorate all in an afternoon. 3. Spray paint is their friend. Add the twigs and branches to displays or centerpieces, or create a wreath that looks like a piece of art. And did I mention they were free?

4. Look at new uses for natural elements

These wood slices add a little rustic flair to any mantel. Why not recycle a little bit of your tree every year? Simply cut off the bottom of your tree and transform it into ornaments or stocking tags with decorative stamps. One-of-kind, personalized, reusable, rustic decor.

Today I’m watching the snow fall and fixing hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. And thinking about decorating. Holiday decorating topped off with a little rustic flair. Good thing I’ve got plenty of inspiration …right outside my door.
