Unique Ideas for Decorative Storage Containers

storage1

I love the thought of organizing. Truly. I’m all about filing and storing and placing and putting and tucking away and a place for everything… and everything in its place.

But the challenge is that I’m all about the thinking and looking and hoping and dreaming and watching the Hallmark channel when I should be organizing.  And less about the doing.  But not this year. This is 2015 after all. This is the year for actually organizing. And to inspire myself and to create new spaces in my house, I’m thinking outside the box and making organizing so pretty that it must be done.

Want to join me? Here are four unique ideas for storage containers to get us started.

    1. Vintage Crate Organizers

Create unique storage using a vintage crate. You can find these vintage crates at thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales. Simply cut the crate in half and add 1 x 2’s across the back to create a pocket. Then hang both parts of the crate on the wall and fill then with over-sized items like these large white platters. Organization and decoration never looked better.

    2. Spoon-Handle Trays

Organize the kitchen with these spoon handle tray organizers. Wooden boxes like these can be found at fleamarkets and junk shops.  I used them to organize the hutch in the kitchen and filled them with rolling pins, plates, serving platters, napkins and extra silverware. Create a one of a kind handle from a vintage silverplate spoon. Bend the spoon into the shape of a handle. Flatten the end of the spoon and stamp with the label for the box. Drill a hole in the end of the spoon and attach to the box with small screws.

    3. Button and ribbon basket

Add a flair to your baskets with a simple ribbon project. Using painter’s tape, hold the ribbon in place. Tack the buttons onto the basket with buttons and needle and thread.  Sew the buttons and ribbons directly onto the basket. I  use baskets like these to organize clutter on the counter.

    4. Spray Painted Baskets

Transform a dollar store basket into a high-end organizing container. Start with a simple basket.  Spray paint gray.  Print out numbers from the computer, and cut out to make a silhouette. Tape number silhouette onto the basket, and cover the remaining part of the basket with plastic grocery bags to eliminate any over-spray. Spray paint number outlines white.

Organize with style. This is the year. I can feel it. This is the year that I’m going to stop talking about it and actually organize…

…right after that Hallmark movie marathon.
