Simple Tips for Organizing Your Craft Room

Craft-Room-1

Before I had a craft room, I could never find anything. The craft paints were in the laundry room, the glue sticks were in the closet, and the pipe cleaners were underneath the kitchen sink. One day I spent an hour trying to find the letter stencils only to discover them in the junk drawer in the family room.

But not now. This is the place where all the craft supplies live at my house. They get together and throw parties and potlucks, attend bridge club, and play monopoly. You have to believe me when I say that… this space is a party waiting to happen.

Have a space you want to set aside for your craft supplies? Here’s a few simple craft room organization tips.

Label, label… who’s got the label?

These organizers all came from the dollar store. They were a dollar a piece and worth every penny. We hung these long shelves on one wall with brackets and filled them with labeled organizers. You can create your own labels from stickers or print them out on a vinyl cutter.

Try to keep labels a little more generic to hold a variety of supplies. I used labels like stickers, crayons, tags, buttons, ribbons and thread.

Think vertically

This pegboard wall provides an amazing amount of organization in a vertical space. Hang pegboards on 1 x 2’s to allow space behind the board to hang the hooks. You can find pegboard accessories like these at your local home improvement store. I purchased baskets, hooks, paint brush holders, canisters and bins to hang on the pegboard wall.

Add built-ins

This desk area is constructed from kitchen cabinets. The craft room is very narrow, so creating a built-in desk area from narrow upper kitchen cabinets helped maximize the space. We connected four upper kitchen cabinets with a long piece of plywood. Attach cabinets to the wall, add the desk top and add decorative trim where needed. I found these chairs at a yard sale for five dollars and added a pop of color to the space with a coat of hot pink paint.

Have fun!

Today’s organizing bins and accessories are so much fun. Think outside the box and add color and graphic appeal to the craft room.

I created these chalkboards in the craft room with a piece of chalkboard foam core and framed it with a cork border. White wire baskets, polka dotted boxes, a pegboard box and hot pink fold-able boxes all provide storage space with style. Complete the look with a black and white polka dotted rug and black and white elephant pillows.

From my partying craft supplies to yours… happy organizing.
