8 Great Things to Do When You’re Inside the Home on a Rainy Day

Rain, Rain, Go Away

When the weather outside is less than inviting, you may find yourself faced with a choice: either go out and brave the downpour, or stay inside and try to find something entertaining to do. If you find yourself leaning toward being a homebody, we’ve got plenty of fun things for you to amuse yourself with. Here are eight great things to do when you’re inside on a rainy day.

Get Creative

“I’m no artist,” you might think to yourself. But don’t let your lack of formal arts education stop you from flexing your creative muscles. After all, some of the best art comes from inspired amateurs who approach creativity from a fresh perspective. Get out those oil paints you’ve been meaning to use, or dust off that old guitar. Create a comic strip or record a silly video in last year’s Halloween costume. Don’t concern yourself with the finished product just yet; it’s really all about the process.

Movie Time

You’ve probably got lots of cool movies you’ve been meaning to watch in your Netflix queue, not to mention some catching up to do on your favorite series. Who says you can’t have movie night during the daytime? Pop some popcorn, draw the blinds, get comfortable, and have a pajama-clad movie marathon with a few of your best friends.

Get Your Exercise Fix

There’s no medicine quite as effective as exercise for chasing away the rainy day blues. So why not spend an hour or so working on your physique? Make a habit of it, and you’ll be looking svelte and toned by the time summer rolls around. Free weights, fitness bands, yoga videos… there are plenty of ways to get fit without ever leaving the house.

Play a Game Inside on a Rainy Day

Most of us have a closet that’s full of games we rarely play. If you happen to be stranded at home with good company, bust out those old favorites. Unless you’re really feeling like a marathon battle for control of Kamchatka, choose something light and fun that won’t make you despise your playing companions.

Get Crafty

There’s something to be said for actually making things with your hands, and it’s likely an experience that too few of us get these days. Rainy afternoons are the perfect opportunity to take up knitting, whittling, or candle making. Choose a craft, get some instructions from the Internet, and make a quick trip to the craft store for supplies. By the end of the day, you’ll have a cool new handmade keepsake and a new skill, to boot.

Patty Cake, Patty Cake

Remember how we said exercise was the best cure for the rainy day blues? Well, hot, steamy baked goods are a close second. Fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies warm the soul like nothing else. A little indulgence never hurt anyone, right?

Get Organized

Most of us have some cluttered little corner in our lives, and rainy days are the perfect time to clean up. True, the process of cleaning up may not be the most enticing rainy day activity, but the feeling of accomplishment you’ll get when you finally go through that stack of unopened mail is well worth the effort.

Camping Staycation

It might not be camping weather outside, but inside it’s perfect. Set up the tent, get out the sleeping bags, and play some wilderness sounds on the iPad. Bonus points for turning the house into a forest complete with potted plant trees and stuffed animal wildlife. This one is the best with kids, but if you want to brave the wilderness on your own, we won’t tell anyone.

No More Rainy Day Blues

Rainy days are less than ideal for outdoor fun, but there’s no need to let them steal your thunder. You can still have lots of fun inside. You just have to let your imagination run wild.
