5 Lessons Moving Taught Me

After my first BIG move across the country I learned a lot of things during the process. Moving is such a fun adventure and was a great experience for my family. Here are 5 lessons moving taught me.

1. Moving is stressful, but don’t let that take the fun out of it.

There is so much to do to prepare for a move, but I tried to find joy in the journey. On days when I felt overwhelmed with being in a new home full of boxes, I would take my kids out for a walk in my new neighborhood. It’s good to take a break and really just enjoy your new home. Tough times can really make or break a family. Let it strengthen yours! We moved away from all of our relatives, so we have really had to rely on our small family and have become so much closer because of it.

2. Everything doesn’t have to be done right away.

When I first moved into our new home, I wanted to fix every last thing that first week. I quickly realized that these things will happen in time. We couldn’t afford to do everything right away, so we made lists and set goals to make those things happen.

3. Getting involved in the community is important.

One of the best ways to meet new people and get involved in your community is to put yourself out there. It is scary, but it is the only way you will make new friends. We have met new friends at our local gym, church, library, pool and the children’s museum. We have also been going to the local farmers market each week, which has been great to meet new people and find out about local businesses.

4. The art of living is adjusting.

My grandma always said this to me and I love it. It is so true. We had to adjust to eating at new restaurants, hanging out with new friends and driving around a new town. We are not quite there, but feeling more acquainted with the area daily.

5. Get to know Google and your GPS.

Enough said.
