Gina’s Home is a Place to Grow

In support of the Inspiring Home Moments campaign Homes.com reached out to bloggers and asked them to share their home moments. These are Gina’s home moments from CharmingZebra.

It doesn’t really matter whether you happen to live in a spacious house by the sea, a tiny city apartment or a cabin in the woods. Your home is much more than a place to dwell. It’s where life happens.

At this point in my life, my home seems to be centered around creating and growing. My children are in their teenage years so the growing part is often quite literal. I have two boys taller than my six-foot-tall husband and another one not far behind.

I thought it would be fun to keep track of their rapid growth by making a height chart out of a plank of wood. I decided to make Roman numerals out of the letters “I” and “V” found at a local craft store. It was really quite a simple project that required some light sanding, a little paint and a bit of super glue. I now have a creative way to keep track of how fast the lads are passing me by.

As a home blogger, my house would never be described as picture perfect. In addition to my ongoing stream of projects, the rest of the family is continually creating, too. My occasional vision of a spotless, magazine worthy house just doesn’t fit our lifestyle. Our home gets a lot of living. My daughter’s main area of play is the kitchen. She is constantly trying new recipes and has developed into quite the little cook. The kitchen is usually a disaster, but the skills she is learning are invaluable. And of course, the tasty meals aren’t bad either.

My hope for my home is to be a haven. A place of learning, growing and creating. A place of safety and love. So now, more than ever, it’s important that my children are able to create and grow within the walls of our home. To make mistakes and yes, lots of messes. For in just a blink of an eye, they will be off creating their own homes. And my husband and I will wonder where the time went. Maybe we’ll think back fondly, of all the experiences we had, the projects completed, the lessons learned of the life we lived. But never how clean the house was.
