Dressing Your Home for Fall

The arrival of fall always has me giddy to kick off my flip-flops and trade them in for a pair of warm, cozy boots and a cable knit scarf. Fall calls for coziness and comfort – and it doesn’t have to stop with your wardrobe! Keep those warm, fuzzy feelings going all autumn long by dressing your home for fall as well.

Now is the time to bust out your favorite throw blankets and keep them close at hand for family members and guests by draping them over your favorite chair, couch, or ottoman. Store any extras in an open top wicker basket so they’re always in sight on those chilly nights. The throw blanket pictured below is a perfect choice for fall with it’s rich teal color and on trend herringbone pattern.

Swap out your summer-colored linen accent pillows with pillows featuring the favorite colors, textures, and patterns of fall. All those gorgeous colors showing off outside right now will look equally as beautiful in your home. Greens, browns, oranges, and warm yellows are all a popular choice, but don’t be afraid to go beyond the basics. A rich, royal purple, dark navy blue, and a warm teal are all interesting and unexpected options to pair with the more traditional fall colors.

For fall textures, look to fabrics that have more of a heavier weight to them, but are still soft and comfortable to the touch. Fall is all about comfort, and fabrics like flannel, heavy knits (like the cable knit pillow pictured above), velour, corduroy, quilted cotton, soft twills, suede, and leather will get you there.

Summer patterns tend to be more curvy and playful – like a whimsical summer garden. For fall, look to patterns that are more straight-lined and intentional – like the beautiful branches of a tree once it’s shed its leaves. Great options for fall include plaid, herringbone, houndstooth, and intentionally repeating and not too fussy geometric and quatrefoil patterns (as seen in the orange runner below).

Bring nature indoors with home accents. Swap out crisp white trays and decorative accents with ones made of wood, faux leather, dark wicker, or rustic metal. Fill trays, bowls, and jars with some of fall’s beautiful bounty including pumpkins, apples, pears, acorns, pinecones, branches, and leaves. Don’t forget to shop your home and consider new ways to repurpose old things, like this fall sweater wreath made using an old cable knit sweater.

Lastly, create a cozy, warm bed that won’t have you dreading leaving the comfort of your fireplace and throw blanket once bedtime hits. Change out your crisp, cotton sheets for warm and inviting flannel ones like the houndstooth flannel sheets seen below. Add a soft velour throw pillow and an extra cable knit blanket at your feet, and enjoy a peaceful fall slumber.
