Update Your Decor Without Spending a Dime!

If you’re hosting for the holidays, you’re probably pacing your home brainstorming ways to refresh and rejuvenate your space. Redecorating for the holidays can be tricky and pretty expensive — unless you know some handy decorating tricks! Hometalker Lory of Designthusiasm is a decorating expert, and she’s got the tips you need to get your house dressed to impress this holiday season!

I have great pieces, but my decor often feels stagnant. How can I repurpose my own decor in a new way?

I love this question, because one of my favorite places to shop is in my own house. I think if your main pieces are classic and beautiful, you can create a feeling of refreshing energy by updating your vignettes. I will often go thematic – either seasonal or something that is of particular interest to me at the moment (an upcoming trip?). Then, I’ll prowl my own home for objects and imagery that fit the mood.

When you look at your pieces from this different perspective, you see things you didn’t notice before. So, for instance, if I’m setting a table with an Amalfi Coast inspiration, all of a sudden everything in my home that works with blue majolica will be given new life, juxtaposed in a new way on that table. I’m constantly moving things around in this way.

What changes makes the biggest impact?

I think color is one of the things that makes the biggest impact, so I like to keep the basis of my rooms relatively neutral, and then change things up with pops of color. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an all-white or beige base, but a pale yellow or sage can act as a neutral. Then, I fold in color to work with the updated look I’m going for. It could be pops of lilac in a sage green room or blue chinois in a yellow room. Change those pops to a different color story and you wind up with a completely different look.

Pillows and throws are a great way to add moveable color, but I also love to decorate with some unconventional items, like fruit on a platter or a scarf tied to a vase. For a pink theme, I might use bottles of rosé wine and I’ll also use stacks of like-toned books to highlight a particular color feeling. Then, the icing on the cake would be fresh flowers to tie back to the new color infusion.
