Creative Ideas for Window Treatments

window-treatment

Why settle for a window simply being a window…when it can be so much more. Basic shades and plain jane curtains are a great temporary fix, but thinking a little outside the box can add a little bling to your windows without breaking the bank.

Need some window-spiration? Here are four clever and inexpensive ideas to make your windows stand out and shine.

Update a simple roller shade

Personalize your windows with style.

To transform a basic roller shade from blah to “where have you been all my life,” all you need is a piece of vinyl artwork. Here, I applied an over-sized monogram to a $10 window shade from the home improvement store. Have the home improvement store cut the shade to fit your window and apply the vinyl to the shade for an easy and inexpensive window update.

Add a faux transom

These windows in the kitchen had classic appeal. I added a shutters and a simple no-sew window treatment by stapling a piece of linen to a 1 x 2 and attaching it inside the window.

But the personality? What really sets these windows apart?

The faux transoms on the top of the window. Create your own by framing out the top of the window with 1×4’s and adding crown molding to the top piece of 1 x 4. Then caulk and paint your transoms for windows with added character and flair.

Basic drop-cloth valance

I made this valence in 1 hour. Seriously. All you need is a 1 x 2 the length of your window. Cut the drop cloth (found at any home improvement store) to fit. Staple the drop cloth to the 1 x 2. Then glue a piece of contrasting ribbon with fabric glue. Attach the 1 x 2 to the inside of the window to finish the project.

Custom cornice board

window4

This is perhaps the most challenging of the window treatments showcased, but it is worth the extra time and effort. This cornice board consists of four pieces.

One large piece for the front, cut in a decorative design. There are also two side pieces and a top piece. Cut all pieces to fit your window and nail together to form a box. Attach to the window and finish the look with long curtains hung from inside the cornice board.

Whatever you do, don’t over think your window treatments. Think outside the box and have a little fun. Your windows will thank you.
